Background of the Study

Postnatal care is crucial for the health and well-being of both mothers and newborns. In Sokoto State, where maternal and neonatal mortality rates remain high, postnatal nursing interventions can significantly influence neonatal outcomes. These interventions include breastfeeding support, newborn care education, and the management of common neonatal issues such as jaundice and infections (Usman et al., 2023). Nurses play a central role in providing postnatal care services, ensuring that mothers receive the necessary education and support during the critical first weeks after childbirth.

This review will assess the impact of postnatal nursing interventions on neonatal health outcomes, focusing on the effectiveness of nursing practices and how they can be improved to reduce neonatal mortality and morbidity in Sokoto State.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the recognition of the importance of postnatal care, neonatal mortality remains a significant challenge in Sokoto State. Postnatal nursing interventions are often inconsistent or unavailable, leading to missed opportunities for early detection and management of neonatal complications. Understanding the impact of these interventions on neonatal outcomes is essential for improving healthcare delivery and outcomes in the region.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the effectiveness of postnatal nursing interventions in improving neonatal health outcomes in Sokoto State.
  2. To evaluate the role of nurses in providing postnatal care to mothers and neonates.
  3. To identify challenges that nurses face in delivering postnatal care in Sokoto State.

Research Questions

  1. How effective are postnatal nursing interventions in improving neonatal health outcomes in Sokoto State?
  2. What is the role of nurses in the postnatal care of neonates in Sokoto State?
  3. What challenges do nurses encounter in delivering postnatal care services?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Postnatal nursing interventions significantly improve neonatal health outcomes in Sokoto State.
  2. Nurses play a critical role in improving neonatal health outcomes through postnatal care interventions.
  3. Barriers such as inadequate training, lack of resources, and cultural beliefs limit the effectiveness of postnatal nursing interventions.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This review will focus on the postnatal nursing interventions provided to mothers and newborns in public healthcare facilities across Sokoto State. Limitations include potential biases in reporting and challenges in evaluating the outcomes of postnatal care interventions.

Definitions of Terms

  • Postnatal Care: The care provided to mothers and newborns during the first six weeks after childbirth, focusing on the early detection and management of health issues.
  • Neonatal Outcomes: Health results related to neonates, including survival rates, the presence of health complications, and early developmental milestones.
  • Breastfeeding Support: Guidance provided to mothers regarding the initiation and maintenance of breastfeeding, which is crucial for neonatal health.
